Signs your roof is asbestos
Corrugated cement roofing was common on Perth homes, garages and carports until the mid-1980s. Look for grey sheets with a weathered, dimpled surface, often with moss or lichen, and cement ridge capping. Painted roofs can hide it, so the age of the building is the best first clue.
Why weathered roofs need care
Decades of sun break down the surface of cement sheet, and old roofs are often too brittle to walk on. Removal is planned around safe access, keeping the sheets wet and lowering them whole rather than breaking them up on the roof.
Roofs, gutters and what's underneath
An asbestos roof often comes with asbestos ridge capping, gable ends or eave linings. A good removalist checks these at the same time so you aren't caught out halfway through a re-roof.
Planning the new roof
If you're replacing the roof, line up the roofer for straight after removal so the building isn't left open to the weather. Your removalist can work to the roofer's timing.
Common questions
Can I paint over an asbestos roof instead?
Painting can seal a roof in good condition, but preparing it must never involve sanding or pressure cleaning. Weathered or damaged roofs are usually better removed.
Do I need to leave the house during removal?
Your removalist will tell you what's needed for your job. Windows and doors are usually kept shut, and the work area is closed off.
Is a garage roof a smaller job?
Usually, yes, but anything over 10 square metres still needs a licensed removalist, and most garage roofs are bigger than that.
